Caliph-Craneby ~AoiShu

There is a lovely fairy tale by by Wilhelm Haulf Caliph-Stork, and there is a great soviet time russian cartoon based on the fairytale. Which had been always inspiring me.

Finally I came up with illustration for it.
I used Hyde as a ref for Caliph, so he might be recognizable. also I used kinda Arab like utensils, but with Japanese patterns, thus Stork changed into a Crane.

Blackand white inks and a bit of white dry pastel.

I think using Hyde as a reference was DEFINITELY a good move

Even as a child, I was struck by how beautiful the Caliph was. It's one of the most gorgeous Soyuzmultfilm films made. I was surprised when I found it on youtube with subtitles; I sent it to everyone I knew because I always wanted to share the old Russian animations with them, but obviously they don't understand Russian...

Yes this cartoon is so special and it had to have a special model, he is so ambivalent and airy... One of the kind! Some people say Caliph-Stork is scary, but even as a kiddy I had been fascinated with how stunningly beautiful it is!

You are right I use Hyde as a ref a lot.. and since he is so stunning, I always feel bad to not make him look like Hyde...

No problem, I like commenting and telling what I think. I don't get much of a chance to speak my mind where I live, but DA is enough therapy for me

. I do wonder...do Ganckt-san and Hyde-san get chased by rabid yaoi fangirls every time they dare show their faces in public?

Japanese fangirls seem more toned down in this respect - after all.. there has to be a common sense in people.. at least I hope so. They even sit during rock concerts...

Sitting during rock concerts kinda sucks in my opinion

It's a rock concert after all, you should stand up and scream at the top of your lungs, bang your head and have a good time. That's what it's all about

I'm happy to hear that japanese fangirls are behaved, though. They'd be a pain in the ass for Hyde-san and all the others if they weren't.

yeh, sitting on a rock concert is a tad too Japanese , but it's not always the case, but huge arenas are like that.
